Just One Damned Thing After Another: The Chronicles of St. Mary’s

Just One Damned Thing After Another: The Chronicles of St. Mary’s by Jodi Taylor

Published 2013

Genre: Historical Fantasy

Setting: England, the near-future

St. Mary’s is a listed estate in the rural countryside of Rushford, England. It functions as the headquarters for a select group of historians, scientists, technicians, and security personnel whose job is to research and record important historic events in contemporary time.

Whatever you do, don’t call it time travel!

Dr. Maxwell/Max, the wayward protagonist of the series, is recruited by her mentor to go through the training program at St. Mary’s. When she is told the secret of what they do, she is ready to set aside her past and commit for life.

This book, and the rest of the wonderful series, is a raucous adventure with an endearing cast of characters—think Dr. Who meets an earth-bound Starship Enterprise (the Historians’ prime directive: don’t interfere with the timeline). Sure, it’s a bit predictable—everything always goes wrong, but that’s in the title!—and the characters can seem somewhat caricature-like at times, but it’s an enjoyable page-turner with a plop-you-right-in-the-middle-of-the-action history lesson.

If you are looking for a fun series to read this summer, this is it!
